Cal Poly Pomona students will participate in the upcoming Southern California Conference for Undergraduate Research (SCCUR).

The event, which will be hosted at Pepperdine University on Saturday, Nov. 19, provides an opportunity for undergraduate students around the region to present and discuss their research among their peers. SCCUR is a one-day conference held each November at a college or university in the greater Los Angeles area intended to celebrate excellence in undergraduate achievement by providing a forum for the best research, scholarship, and creative work of undergraduates.

With this years' conference theme being, "Inspiration", 57 students registered to present at SCCUR in either 15-minute formal panel presentations chaired by faculty members, in poster form, or in exhibition or performance. The students who registered to present will have their "first conference" experience, which will include networking and practicing their communication skills in a professional and scholarly setting.

"Under the direction of Cal Poly Pomona faculty, students engage in research, project-based, and creative activities, known as high-impact practices that can lead to twice the likelihood of graduation," said Ever Barranza, lead administrator of the Office of Undergraduate Research "Understanding the impact of research on student success, SCCUR is a research and creative activities conference that allows for the dissemination of research. Cal Poly Pomona students well represent our university, showcasing their research accomplishments. We are proud of the Cal Poly Pomona students who participate in SCCUR and share their results with the research community."

There are numerous benefits in undergraduate students becoming involved in research at Cal Poly Pomona. While participating in undergraduate research benefits academic growth, that can trickle into career aspirations. Students who participate in research are more likely to graduate, and it fulfills the requirement for prospective employers looking for hires with one to two years of experience.The opportunities provided by the Office of Undergraduate Research embody Cal Poly Pomona's signature "Learn by Doing" model, as students are encouraged to get involved in research projects that best serve their unique interests.

While the next SCCUR conference will not occur next until fall, there are still plenty of opportunities for students who would like to present their research in a scholarly setting, including the Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities (RSCA) on Friday, March. 4 at Ursa Major and Minor. Applications will be open from Thursday, Dec. 1 to Monday, Feb. 13. All disciplines are welcome to participate.
