Cal Poly Pomona will celebrate its newest graduates with in-person Commencement ceremonies on May 20-22 in its traditional location in the University Quad.

More than 7,200 from the Class of 2022 will be joined by approximately 1,000 graduates from summer 2021 and fall 2021 in 12 commencement ceremonies. Including family and friends, more than 64,600 people are expected to attend.

For Sally Sayed ('22, electrical engineering) nothing will beat the exuberance of crossing the finish line with classmates. On May 22, she will walk the stage in her regalia as the valedictorian of the College of Engineering.

"As much experience I had with online and home school, the pandemic was a unique time for us all," Sayed said. "I am thankful to have been able to experience my last semester in person and to be able to walk with my fellow graduates."

When Itzia Salinas Cortes ('22, architecture) crosses the stage during the College of Environmental Design ceremony, the moment will signify more than the completion of her studies. It will be the culmination of "every challenge conquered."

"Now it's time to celebrate!" she said. "I'm thankful for the challenges that brought me closer to new friends, new laughs and new lessons. The journey was long but worth the wait! No matter how long, this moment is mine."

Receiving honorary degrees during the weekend are:

• Violet Palmer ('88, recreation administration), the first female referee in the NBA and coordinator of women's basketball officials for three collegiate conferences. She will be the guest speaker at the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences ceremonies.
• Larry Gates ('87, civil engineering), co-founder DRC Engineering. He will be the guest speaker for the College of Engineering ceremonies.

This month will also be the last photo opportunity with the university's iconic CLA Tower, which will be demolished this summer and transformed into green space by Spring 2023. Between May 14 and May 22, contractors will pull back fencing to accommodate non-commercial photography in the Aratani Japanese Garden adjacent to the CLA Tower.
