Black History Month Events Highlight Campus Contributions, Cultural Appropriation, Identity

Want to know the origin story of the Black Student Union at Cal Poly Pomona? Have questions about multiracial identity or cultural appropriation?

The CPP African American Student Center (AASC) is hosting a series of events during Black History Month that will answer some of these questions and provide space for students to share about their own experiences. The events will culminate with a fun atmosphere at Black Renaissance Open Mic Night, an evening of food, games, art, and good company on Feb. 23.

Student justice leader and Black Student Union (BSU) president Terrion Chavers will host an event on Feb. 15 at 5 p.m., highlighting the history of the BSU at Cal Poly Pomona. The conversation will expound upon how spaces on campus for Black students were carved out over the years.

The Black Student Union is an organization dedicated to the personal and academic advancement of African American students by helping to develop leaders and promote virtues such as productivity, discipline, unity, self-determination, and purpose - and Chavers will pay homage to the organization's many accomplishments.

A discussion about cultural appropriation hosted by the African American Student Center is set for Feb. 17. "'My____Friend Said it Was Cool,' A Discussion on Cultural Appropriation: what's okay and not okay," will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m., aiming to demonstrate how to appreciate and honor a culture without dehumanization.

"Spilling the Tea: Multiracial/Multiethnic Identities," is an event hosted by four cultural centers on campus aimed at discussing the many ways multiracial/multiethnic people can identify. Join the AASC, César E Chávez Center for Higher Education, Asian and Pacific Islander Center and Native American Student Center for a game geared toward this fruitful discussion on Feb. 23 from noon to 1:30 p.m.
