Two Cal Poly Pomona students received awards and over 100 presented at the Southern California Conferences for Undergraduate Research (SCCUR) on Nov. 23.
SCCUR is a one-day conference held each November at a college or university in the greater Los Angeles area intended to celebrate excellence in undergraduate achievement by providing a forum for the best research, scholarship, and creative work of undergraduates in the region.
Sarah Caballero, a masters student in nutrition and food science, and Celine Parker, a senior studying biochemistry, received exemplary presentation awards for their poster and oral presentations, respectively.
"SCCUR is a wonderful venue for Cal Poly Pomona students to share their hard work with other institutions and the community and to receive feedback for moving their projects and research forward," said Winny Dong, Faculty Director of the Office of Undergraduate Research.
The SCCUR conference has been hosted at 17 different universities since its initiation in 1993. This year, CSU San Marcos hosted with an estimated overall event attendance of 1,200 people from over 80 institutions in Southern California and the rest of the country.
Attendance included mostly undergraduates, along with their faculty mentors, administrators, families, and community college and high school students. The Office of Undergraduate Research sponsored a bus to transport the Cal Poly Pomona participants to SCCUR.
Caballero received an exemplary presentation award for her poster on the "Impact of Maillard Conjugation on Stability and Antioxidant Activity of Pea Protein or Caseinate Nanoemulsions." Parker received the same award for her oral presentation on "Oxidation of Alcohols Using a Novel Molybdenum Catalyst." Both students plan to continue their research.
Cal Tech will host SCURR 2020 in Pasadena next Fall. However, CPP students can present their research much sooner during the Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities (RSCA) at Cal Poly Pomona on March 7. Abstracts are due Jan. 30.
