As Cal Poly Pomona prepares to welcome new freshmen and transfer students this fall, the Department of Facilities Planning and Management has been working this summer to improve university facilities and enhance campus safety.
Facilities staff initiated and completed several projects. They include:
Parking
An agreement has been finalized to lease approximately 500 parking spaces at the Corporate Center on South Campus Drive. An additional shuttle route will be added to transport students from that parking lot. The overflow parking lot at Innovation Village, which contains about 350 spaces, has been prepared for the fall semester.
Fire Alarms
The fire monitoring and response system received substantial upgrades after the completion of a project that links all campus buildings to University Police headquarters. The project updates the fire monitoring systems in 45 buildings across the campus. The completion of the project in last July ensures that buildings across the campus meet current state fire codes.
Elevators
Three elevators in the College of Engineering (Building 9) are receiving extensive upgrades in a modernization project that started over the summer. The project involves installing state-of-the art controls and panels along with new motors, cables and other hardware. Two elevators will be in service at all times during the modernization work.
Campus Improvements
A lighting retrofit project was completed in the University Library. HVAC systems have been re-programmed for extended hours and the Chilled Water Plant is prepared to provide additional cooling to buildings. Twenty-five offices, two classrooms and five restrooms were repainted. Fume hoods were installed and the exhaust systems were renovated in the Science Laboratory (Building 3) and College of Science (Building 8). Outdoor seating for the Bronco Student Center has been ordered.
Trash Cans
Additional Big Belly trash and recycling containers have been purchased and will be paired with existing concrete trash and recycling bins. More trash and recycling containers have been purchased and will be placed in classrooms and other interior spaces.
Service Outage Signs
The Custodial Services staff is placing new "Temporarily Out of Service" stickers on fixtures and other items that need repair, replacement or maintenance. The signs let the campus community know that Facilities is aware of the problem and that a work order has been placed. The new signs will allow work crews to respond faster.
Bronco Bookstore
New water pipes, wiring and conduits were installed in the Bronco Bookstore as part of an air handler replacement project that will improve ventilation to the bookstore and offices located in the building.
New Field Turf
The turf in soccer fields near Kellogg Arena was taken out over the summer and new grass was planted. The project encompassed approximately 150,000 square feet. The new turf is expected to be ready for students and athletes for the start of the fall semester.
Campus Water
Additional chilled drinking fountains have been installed across the campus. A project to install flow meters to monitor the use of reclaimed water will stretch into the start of the fall semester. The monitors, which are being installed in more than a dozen locations across campus, also will help detect breaks in water pipes.
Restroom Overhaul
The drainage system in the second-floor men's restroom in the Art Department and Engineering Annex (Building 13) was refurbished to prevent backlogs and overflows.
In addition, Facilities has initiated several projects to improve the infrastructure, including ongoing deferred maintenance work across the campus. Information about projects, repairs and service interruptions on campus can be found on The Compass website.
