SSB Evacuation Drill Scheduled Over Spring Break

Faculty and Staff participate in an evacuation exercise.

The first ever evacuation drill of the Student Services Building at Cal Poly Pomona will be held on Wednesday, April 3 at 10:30 a.m.

Loud sirens and bright strobe lights will be activated in both east and west sections of the building. Evacuation coordinators (also known as floor captains and building marshals) and University Police will assist people in the evacuation drill.

Led by the Department of Emergency Management, the test is an opportunity for the campus community to familiarize themselves and practice emergency procedures.

"It's important that our community knows what to do in an emergency," said Whitney Fields, executive director of emergency management & business continuity. "These planned events are opportunities for each of us to refresh our understanding of emergency procedures. You want to know what works, what doesn't and what needs more attention, and the only way know is through practice."

Other important information:

  • The evacuation zone for the SSB is the grassy hill between the building and University Plaza (old stables).
  • Take the stairs to exit the building. All staircases lead to first floor exits.
  • The main staircase in the east side will be blocked off by a fire door and will not be accessible.
  • Elevators will not operate when the fire alarm is activated. They will go to the ground floor and doors will open.
  • For individuals who have trouble using the stairs, evacuation chairs are available. In the east side, one is available on the both the second and third floors, across from the elevators. On the west side, the evacuation chair is on the second floor by the elevator.
  • Evacuation coordinators will be wearing green vests and hard hats.
  • Once you have evacuated, check in with your evacuation coordinator.
  • Wait for the all-clear from emergency management & business continuity before entering the building again.

If you have questions or concerns about the evacuation drill, contact Whitney Fields or Ernie Fierro, emergency management coordinator, at 909-869-4022 or em@cpp.edu or visit www.cpp.edu/em/.
