As one door opens at the new Student Services Building (SSB), another one closes at the iconic CLA Building.

The tower side of the CLA, which became the architectural centerpiece and administrative hub when it opened in 1993, has been shut down. The classroom side of the CLA will continue to be fully operational.

The future of the CLA tower will be addressed at a later date.

University administration and most of the divisions and departments that had been housed in the CLA tower are operating in the SSB, which was designed to deliver efficient and streamlined services to students.

Signs have been placed around the CLA tower directing students to go to the SSB. Floor maps of the SSB, FAQs, a video tutorial and other information are available on The Compass.

The first-floor tower entrance near the George and Sakaye Aratani Japanese Garden has been shut down. Access to the hallway from the entrance near the CLA stairs also has been sealed off. However, access to the elevators near that first-floor entrance is open and the vending machines will remain in place.

The doors of the CLA tower have been re-keyed to deter unauthorized entry.

The heating and ventilation system will be taken off line gradually, as well as water flow to the building. The building's fire monitoring system will remain active, however. Maintenance crews from Facilities Planning & Management will make regular rounds of the floors to check for leaks and malfunctions inside the building.
