The 14th Annual Cyber Security & Awareness Fair offered Broncos some tips on how to safely navigate cyberspace. CPP students attended hands-on workshops and presentations from tech industry leaders, including Northrop Grumman.
Diane Miller is a CPP alumna ('81, information systems) and the director of global cyber-education & workforce development at Northrop Grumman.
Here are the top five tips from her presentation: "Cyber Security: Cool Stuff for Everyone."
- Don't enable the geolocation (GPS) tagging when sharing photos of yourself online. You don't always want strangers to know your location.
- Ask permission before you post or tag pictures of your friends or family. They may not want their personal information shared with your followers.
- Find out about the privacy practices of each social media site you use. Understand the privacy controls and enable as many as you can to protect your private information.
- Don't store your credit card information in your web browser. This makes your information vulnerable. An adversary will want to go where it's easiest to collect a lot of credit card information at once!
- When you participate in online gaming, the other gamers are often strangers. Protect your identity by creating a pseudonym, so you can keep the gaming world separate from real life.
These tips introduce the importance of protecting your online identity and keeping your personal information safe. According to Miller, once your information is out there, it's always out there, so don't let it fall into the wrong hands because of careless online habits.
