Cal Poly Pomona will host the 99th annual Pacific Division Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) on June 12-15, 2018. The meeting will include public lectures, technical sessions, posters, workshops, several sessions focused on science education for K-14 teachers, a scientific maker exhibit and educational field trips.
The Public Plenary Lecture Series features three topics and speakers:
- Imagineering the Future of Entertainment presented by Jon Snoddy, head of the research and development studio for Walt Disney Imagineering;
- Aircraft - Current and Future Engineering Trends from Joan Robinson-Berry, vice president and general manager, Boeing South Carolina, Boeing Commercial Airplanes; and
- Meeting the Energy Needs for Spacecraft Exploring Our Solar System: Past, Present and Future presented by Jean-Pierre Fleurial, manager of the Thermal Energy Conversion Technology Group and Nuclear Space power Office Technology Advancement Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California institute of Technology.
There is no charge to attend these sessions, and registration is not required for them.
The scientific maker exhibit features items created to further science and teach science using 'maker" technologies like 3D printing, Arduino electronics, sensors, open source plans and codes, among other resources to make data visualizations, experimental equipment and citizen science projects. See what scientists are creating to solve challenges and problems.
Among the symposia with a regional focus are sessions on advances in structural engineering for earthquake resistance; the implications of foodborne pathogens for agriculture; corrosion and protective coatings; and new paleontology insights form the La Brea Tar Pits. Other topics include cyber security issues in a complex grid system, nanomaterials-synthesis, rocket propulsion, space power technologies, pharmaceutical research and development, and "saving the planet one course at a time."
Workshop topics include 3-D printing, and open source science hardware; an introduction to wearable fashion electronics, using games to teach children science and communicating science to the public.
Registration is required to attend and available at the event. The cost is $140 for professional, non-presenters; $100 for professional, program planners or presenters; and $70 for K-12 teachers, community college teachers, post-docs, students, retirees/emeriti faculty, and unemployed people. There is an additional cost for the field trips and the Advanced Beer Tasting Workshop.
