A new access road that connects Eucalyptus Lane with newly realigned Kellogg Drive at Red Gum Lane will open on Thursday, Feb. 1, enhancing pedestrian safety and traffic circulation on campus.

Drivers will now be able to get to the Children's Center, the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation offices, Parking Lot G and the Residential Suites using the new two-lane access road. The current three-way stop at the intersection of Kellogg Drive and Red Gum Lane will become a four-way intersection after traffic signals are reprogrammed.

Commuters who need to get to the Children's Center, Foundation offices and Parking Lot G have been diverted to Eucalyptus Lane from University Drive. The former access road was shut down last October to allow for the installation of underground utilities for the Dining Commons component of the Student Housing Replacement Project.

On Eucalyptus Lane in the Bronco Commons area, stop and speed limit signs to slow traffic were installed and crosswalks and lane markings were painted on the road to alert drivers of pedestrians.

With the opening of the access road, non-university vehicles are not permitted to enter the Bronco Commons pedestrian zone. The stop signs will be taken out and the lane markings removed. Also, street bollards will be put back in place and a traffic gate arm will be reactivated.

The new road, which also connects to the intersection of Eucalyptus Lane and Bronco Way, does not grant non-university vehicles access to the center of campus. A sign alerting drivers that the road is not a through street will be posted near the four-way intersection.

The realigned portion of Kellogg Drive opened last August and links commuters from South Campus Drive to Red Gum Lane.

The Student Housing Replacement Project consists of two eight-story mid-rise towers that contain 980 beds and encompass 280,000 square feet. A Dining Commons facility that can accommodate 680 students at a time also is part of the complex. The project is being overseen by the Department of Planning, Design & Construction.
