CPP Foundation Remodeling Project Adds Design Flair to Starbucks

The remodeled Starbucks in the University Library has reopened and features a configured interior and new furnishings.

Java junkies looking to get their next caffeine fix will find perked up architectural flourishes at the newly remodeled Starbucks at the University Library.

The summer lull allowed the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, which owns and operates the coffeehouse, to shut down the store for a remodeling project to improve the service and ambience at one of the busiest dining spots on campus. The renovation started soon after Commencement.

Starbucks will be open Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. until the fall quarter begins.

One of the first things that members of the coffee klatch will notice is the interior configuration. The removal of wooden wall fixtures will provide a more "airy and roomy" feel to the space, said Sandra Cain, associate director of dining services.

Instead of waiting in line around a circular counter, customers will order in a straight single-file line. The redesigned work area aims to improve efficiency. Baristas will need to take fewer steps to prepare orders, Cain said.

In addition, the new configuration doubles the number of seats and creates more space for customers to stand and mingle inside.

It's not just the taste in décor that is changing. The furnishings, which include a community bench and artwork, are new.

"We are very lucky to have received custom pieces that will be unique to our store," Cain said.

Power strips for customers to plug in phones, laptops and other electronic devices have also been installed, and more will be added, Cain said.

The remodeled store features a "chilled wall" with a large selection of grab-and-go items. The drink menu has not changed. In addition to Nitro Cold Brew selections on tap, pumpkin spice-flavored drinks will be offered in the fall.

From Sept. 18 to Sept. 24, Starbucks will be open Monday through Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Thursday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. Starting Sept. 25, hours on Monday through Thursday will be 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
