Cal Poly Pomona has been in discussions with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) regarding the "I-10 Project" and its impact on our campus. Caltrans and Cal Poly Pomona have partnered in an attempt to minimize the disruption to our community.
The I-10 Project is constructing a High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV or carpool) lane in each direction of the freeway. Bridge widening, soundwall and retaining wall construction and ramp work will also take place. The final segment of the I-10 Project began construction April 2016 and will continue through 2021.
Beginning this December Caltrans will begin construction of a retaining wall near our campus and residence halls. Construction activities will include pile driving, which can create a hammer-like thudding noise with slight ground vibration as well.
In order to mitigate the impact on students, Caltrans will modify its construction schedule as follows:
- Pile driving near Cal Poly Pomona's Aliso and Montecito residence halls will take place on an accelerated schedule beginning after finals week and concluding before the start of winter quarter, from Dec. 12, 2016 through Jan. 3, 2017.
- The temporary accelerated schedule will be in place Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
- Caltrans will utilize equipment that reduces the intensity of the noise generated.
Access to the Kellogg Drive off-ramp will remain open throughout the upcoming construction activities. A second phase of pile driving behind Encinitas Hall, Los Olivos and Kellogg House is anticipated to begin January 2017 and continue through April 2017.
Caltrans will continue to work with the university on mitigation strategies for all construction activities near the campus.
