He helped President Bill Clinton win the White House in 1992. She served as campaign director for President George H.W. Bush.
James "The Ragin' Cajun" Carville and Mary Matalin may come from opposite ends of the political spectrum, but in love, the married couple couldn't be more in sync.
In a talk billed as "All's Fair: Love, War and Politics," the duo will discuss their marriage and careers in politics at Cal Poly Pomona on Wednesday, Jan. 27 as part of the university's Kellogg Distinguished Public Lecture Series.
Check-in for the event is 6 p.m., when a light dinner will be provided. The lecture and question-and-answer session will start at 7 and a book signing will follow at 8:30 p.m. The event is open to the public, but registration is required. No photography or video recording is allowed.
Carville, America's best-known political consultant, became notable due to his talent for taking political underdogs and making them election victors. He earned national attention in 1991 when he brought Sen. Harris Wofford (D-Penn.) back from 40 points behind in the polls to pull off an upset victory over former Pennsylvania Governor and U.S. Attorney General Richard Thornburgh.
His most notable victory came in 1992 when he helped Clinton win the presidency over incumbent President George H.W. Bush and third-party challenger Ross Perot.
Matalin, an author, television and radio host, and political pundit, also found success in the political arena. She served under President Ronald Reagan, spearheaded the elder Bush's presidential campaign, and worked as assistant to President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, the first White House official in that dual role.
The couple lives in New Orleans with their two daughters and is very active in their community. They have co-authored the bestselling books "All's Fair: Love, War and Running for President" and "Love & War: Twenty Year, Three Presidents, Two Daughters and One Louisiana Home."
