With lights having been installed over the past month and a new scoreboard on the way, the Scolinos Field project is now in full swing.
Initiated with a gift of $500,000 from alumnus Danny Andrews, the facility's new upgrades will be on full display on Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Cal Poly Pomona baseball program's Alumni Night and lights ceremony. The program will also host its Alumni Golf Tournament on Jan. 29.
The Broncos will play their first official night game on Thursday, Feb. 4 with a 6 p.m. first pitch against Concordia. Toward the end of the 2015 season, CPP ranked at No. 1 in the West but hosted regionals at Mt. SAC because of Scolinos Field not having lights. That has changed for 2016 and the Broncos will now be eligible to host on their home field.
Planning for the facility began several years ago with further plans to include, once fully completed: stadium-style seating with chair back seats that will replace the existing bleachers; permanent restrooms, concession stand and press box; enhanced batting cages; a fully equipped clubhouse; and a donor recognition wall.

Over the past year, additional gifts have come in which have helped to move the project ahead. In the fall of 2014 a gift of $600,000 from an anonymous source was used by the University to fulfill the needed funding for the installation of the lights. A pledge of $20,000 has helped launch the efforts to install a new scoreboard this season as well.
Two gifts, one from alumnus Kevin Beno and the other from Director of Athletics Brian Swanson and his wife Julie, are helping to aid future development of the project.
"This is an important priority for our department and the University," Swanson said. "Julie and I are proud to make our own commitment to this project, not only recognizing Coach Scolinos but also building for the future of the program."
The project has been divided into various components, including:
- Lighting Component (Installation of Lights for Night Games meeting NCAA & Broadcast Standards)
- Field Component (Renovation/Relocation of Backstop, Dugouts, Batting Cages & Team Bullpens)
- Spectator Component (Scoreboard, Spectator Seating & Press Box, Sound System, Restrooms & Landscaping)
- Team Component (New Team Room/Clubhouse & Storage; Final Landscaping & Monumental Recognition)

After finishing last season ranked as the No. 3 team in the country, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team will be looking to defend a number of titles. Those titles include California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Regular Season Champion, CCAA Tournament Champion, and West Region Champion.
The Broncos' 2016 schedule has been released and features 50 games that the Green and Gold will play this season. With the addition of the lights, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team will begin playing night games this season. The season opener for the Broncos will be against Concordia and will be the first night game in Broncos' baseball history. That game is set for Feb. 4 at 6 p.m.
California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play will begin on Feb. 27, as the Broncos head north to challenge the San Francisco State Gators, a program with an entirely new coaching staff.
With UC San Diego looking to avenge last season's West Regional Final loss, the Broncos will split hosting duties with the Tritons this season. The first contest will be a 6 p.m. night game at Scolinos Field on Saturday, March 19. The UCSD squad finished second in conference to the Broncos last season and were topped by the CPP squad in 5-of-6 meetings.
