Cal Poly Pomona's Veterans Services Initiative will salute service members with a series of events.
On Tuesday, Nov. 4, the university's Veterans Service Initiative will host the Military & Equine Heritage Celebration from noon to 1 p.m. in University Park.
The event will give the campus community a chance to learn about how Cal Poly Pomona served as a Quartermaster Depot for the U.S. Army during World War II, says Elke Azpeitia, veterans' services coordinator.
"We want to share that history because not many people know about that," she says.
Participants will get a chance to take photos with the university's Arabian horses and with members of the U.S. Army 11th Armored Calvary Regiment's Horse Detachment, who are expected to appear wearing World War II military uniforms. Historical photos and artifacts also will be displayed.
The celebration continues Wednesday, Nov. 5, with Athletics' Military Appreciation Night during the volleyball game at Kellogg Gym. The game starts at 7 p.m.
All current and prior service members will get free admission by presenting their military identification or reserving a seat through the Veteran's Resource Center. To RSVP, send an email to Azpeitia at emazpeitia@cpp.edu. For questions at Military Appreciation Night, send an email to Monica Mangaliman at mpmangaliman@cpp.edu.
On Thursday, Nov. 6, a Veterans Day observance is planned from noon to 1 p.m. in University Park.
U.S. Marines from Camp Pendleton will present the colors, and Cal Poly Pomona's Wind Ensemble will perform.
Cal Poly Pomona's Staff Council will host a booth where the campus community will have an opportunity to sign holiday cards for service members. The cards will be sent to Operation Gratitude, which is a nonprofit organization that sends care packages and letters of appreciation to service members, veterans and first responders.
