After 25 years at Cal Poly Pomona, Doug Freer has accepted a position at California State University, San Bernardino, as its vice president for administration and finance and chief financial officer. His appointment begins Aug. 18.

"Cal Poly Pomona is a stronger, more diverse, student-centered university thanks to Doug," says University President J. Michael Ortiz. "While it is difficult to see dedicated and talented people leave, this is an incredible opportunity for him. Our sister campus in San Bernardino is lucky to have his experienced leadership."

Since joining Cal Poly Pomona in 1990, Freer has been a tireless advocate for students and the services that support them. For the past nine years, he has served as vice president of student affairs. During his tenure, he implemented an aggressive set of enrollment management strategies that significantly raised the entering student profile and broadened the appeal of the university to state-wide, national and international student populations.

Freer has led multiple capital expansion efforts that have transformed Cal Poly Pomona and dramatically improved student engagement. Totaling more than $250 million, capital projects under his leadership have included the award-winning Residential Suites student housing community, the Bronco Recreation and Intramural Complex, roadway improvements, modifications to support students with disabilities, a parking structure, parking lot expansions, new dining venues, and Bronco Commons for major campus events and recreational sports.

He has been recognized with the Scott Goodnight Award for Outstanding Performance by a chief student affairs officer by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (Region VI) and the Excellence in Educational Administration award by the Inland Valley News. In addition, his division was recently named one of the "Top 30 Most Promising Places to Work in Student Affairs" by the American College Personnel Association in partnership with Diverse Issues in Higher Education.

"I consider myself extremely fortunate to have had this incredible experience at Cal Poly Pomona and I'm very grateful to President Ortiz for the opportunity," says Freer. "While I am excited about the new opportunity that awaits, the decision to transition to another campus is one that was very difficult for me. My emotional ties to the students and countless friends and colleagues here is something I have cherished and will take with me. Cal Poly Pomona is a very special place and I have considered it a privilege to have made a mark here."

Previously as associate vice president, he was responsible for university housing services and parking and transportation services. He also led the division-based fiscal management, human resources, technology and information systems, and capital and organizational planning. In addition, he has served as assistant vice president and director of university housing services.

Freer holds a doctoral degree from UCLA, an MBA from California State University, Long Beach, and a bachelor's from Adelphi University in New York.
