In Memoriam: Janet "Jean" Kellogg

Janet "Jean" Kellogg

Janet "Jean" Kellogg, a longtime benefactor of Cal Poly Pomona, died in her home in Rancho Santa Fe on June 17. She was 96.

Born Oct. 5, 1917, in Bear Creek, Wisconsin, she graduated from high school at age 16, and though accepted, wasn't able to attend college due to the Depression.

She led a life full of variety that included managing a grocery store, traveling and growing award-winning roses. Kellogg was actively engaged in her community as a member of the Rancho Santa Fe County Friends and the Rancho Santa Fe Library Guild.

She married W. Keith Kellogg II in 1968, and together they were advocates for education. W. Keith Kellogg II is the namesake and grandson of cereal magnate W. K. Kellogg, one of the founders of Cal Poly Pomona. His donation of his winter home and Arabian horse ranch led to what is now the Cal Poly Pomona campus.

As benefactors of the university, Jean and Keith contributed to the W. Keith & Janet Kellogg University Art Gallery and the Kellogg Honors College.

Together they also supported the graduate program at Scripps Research Institute and Cal State San Marcos. In 1999, she was awarded an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters from Cal State San Marcos.

W. Keith died in 2005 at age 98.

Jean Kellogg is survived by her two children Tomas C. O'Connor and Carolyn McGurn and two stepchildren William K. Kellogg III and Joanne Beverlin. She had four grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
