Following the devastating effects of Typhoon Haiyan, students and staff at Cal Poly Pomona have launched a relief effort to help disaster victims in the Philippines.
The Asian and Pacific Islander Student Center (APISC) and several of its student organizations have banded together to hold a donation drive for Angels of Hope, a nonprofit organization that benefits children and families in the Philippines. Canned goods, toiletries and clothing - especially children's clothing - are greatly needed.
Maurice Rhee, business student and vice president of API student group Barkada, says that the typhoon hit close to home for many of his club members. "We have members that were born in the Philippines and still have family there," Rhee says. "We didn't just want to sit back and do nothing."
Donation will be accepted until Dec. 13. Drop-off boxes will be set up at the following locations:
- The Office of Student Life & Cultural Centers (Asian & Pacific Islander Student Center, Cesar E. Chavez Center for Higher Education, Violence Prevention and Women's Resource Center, Pride Center, Native American Student Center, African American Student Center)
- International Center (Building 1, room 104)
- Bronco Bookstore
- College of Business Advising Student Success Center (Building 164, room 1060)
- Cashier's Office
- Bronco Student Center
- Registrar's Office
- Campus Marketplace
- University Library
- University Village
- Test Center (Building 98, room P2-004)
- Police Station
- Residence Halls and Suites (Cedritos, Montecito, Encinitas, Vista Del Sol, Vista Del Bonita)
The campus community can also make cash donations to Angels of Hope through the campus credit union. Student account specialist Jessie Leonor, who is heavily involved in the organization, says that donated money will be used to help rebuild family homes in the remote areas affected by the typhoon.
Credit union members can call (909) 869-6801 or email staff@calpolyfcu.org to transfer money from their account to the relief fund. Cash or check deposits can also be dropped off until Dec. 24 at the credit union office, located in the Bronco Student Center.
