Amelia Hammond was a Cal Poly Pomona staff employee from 1962 to 1980. She served on Staff Council and founded the scholarship program in 1978 for employees pursuing higher education. Hammond died in June 2003, and the awards continue in her memory.

Each year, Staff Council raises scholarship funds through the Staff Council Valentine's Day drawing. Scholarship recipients must use the funds for career development or personal job improvement education that is not covered by release time or fee waiver programs. Courses may be taken at community colleges, universities or technical schools.

In addition, 32 retiring managers and staff members were recognized with emeritus status. Established in 1981, this award is given to retiring employees who have worked at Cal Poly Pomona for at least 10 years and have demonstrated outstanding job performance, support of university programs and involvement in campus activities.

Emeritus Awards

Emeriti are granted certain privileges such as free parking; use of the University Library; free admission to campus events such as athletic, music and theatre events and the Arabian horse shows; use of campus recreational, dining services and social facilities on the same basis as currently employed persons, including the gym, swimming pool and Bronco Student Center; a Cal Poly Pomona email account and various discount coupons.
