Staff Council honored four employees - Jesse Quiroz, Jorge Bonilla, Sonia Campos and Kevin Malone - as Outstanding Staff for 2012. The staff members are awarded for exemplifying expertise, dedication and enthusiasm in their job performance, showing a willingness to assist, working well with others and making university-wide contributions.
This year's award recipients were recognized during the Staff Appreciation luncheon on June 14.
Kevin Malone
Assistant to the Dean/Department Administrative Assistant/Faculty Support Coordinator, College of Education & Integrative Studies
Years of Service: 4 years
Kevin Malone is a consummate professional, assisting faculty and staff with their needs. He facilitates the work of others so they may be successful. While he is jokingly called "the glue," he is the person at the center of all the operations in the college. He is consistently upgrading his skills. A self-starter, Malone takes advantage of every professional development opportunity that supports the work of the college. When he needs to learn more about web design, he seeks off campus help and learns on his own. He enjoys collaborating with I&IT in order to help with meeting faculty and staff needs. Malone is working on his master's degree in public administration.
Jesse Quiroz
Area Lead for Landscape/Horticultural Services, Facilities Management
Years of Service: 23 years
Jesse Quiroz is a "behind the scenes" worker who is instrumental in keeping the campus beautiful. He is responsible for the University Quad, Kellogg House, several parking lots and the area from Building 7 to Building 94. He is enthusiastic in his work and practices landscaping at home to hone his skills. He is finishing his bachelor's degree in ornamental horticulture at Cal Poly Pomona. He recently received an award for 10 years of perfect attendance. Quiroz helps to support over 200 events on campus every year by preparing the grounds, coordinating with students, faculty, vendors and others.
Jorge Bonilla
Equipment Systems Specialist, Student Affairs Information & Technology Services
Years of Service: 6 years
Jorge Bonilla's service area consists of 13 departments and more than 400 users. In his first year, he closed nearly 1,000 ticket requests. It is not uncommon for him to take a late lunch or a shortened lunch just to keep a user from having any delay in completing his/her work. It was this dedication that won him not only the 2007 STAR award but also the STAR of the Year award. Bonilla's enthusiasm is contagious, and he acknowledges each member in the department with his customary greeting of "Hello, my friend, how are you doing?"
Sonia Campos
Assistant to the Director, Intercollegiate Athletics
Years of Service: 19 years
Sonia Campos goes out of her way to establish and maintain outstanding relationships with the campus community. She is the front line and is warmly welcomed by everyone she comes in contact with. She is regularly contacted by the Office of the President and Vice President for Student Affairs and they know her "get it done" in a professional manner reflects outstandingly on campus. Campos handles numerous functions, such as ticketing, working with parents and donors, and unique site logistics such as meals and transportation with absolute accuracy. Campos bleeds green and gold. She attends numerous sporting events and often brings her family on evenings and weekends. She is truly "all in" in supporting students, student athletes, coaches and staff.
