Speaker to Discuss Medical Experimentation, Body Politics

Harriet Washington, medical writer and editor

Medical writer and editor Harriet Washington will speak
on medical apartheid and body politics on Wednesday,
Oct. 19
from 2 to 4 p.m. in Ursa Major in the BSC. Her talk is part of a
year-long series focusing on women, gender, sexuality and the body sponsored
through the La Bounty Endowed Chair in Interdisciplinary Applied Knowledge.

Washington authored the 2007 best-seller ¿Medical
Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from
Colonial Times to the Present,¿ which chronicles the history of African
Americans used in medical and drug experimentation.

This year¿s La Bounty series is titled ¿Challenging
Social Norms: Re-envisioning Women, Gender, Sexuality, and the Body.¿ Discussion
and presentation topics include: gender inequalities in sports, education,
science and engineering; women¿s bodies and sexuality; and activism and
empowerment through the arts.

Jocelyn Pacleb, ethic and women¿s studies professor and a
member of the La Bounty committee, says the committee wanted to focus on current
gender issues at the global and national level, as well as issues that are
relevant to the campus community. The invited scholars, activists and
performers will share their experience in raising awareness and reducing gender
inequalities.

¿The committee members each have experience working on
gender issues in our own respective departments, academic and student affairs,¿
Pacleb says. ¿Past racial and sexist incidents on our campus have often brought
us together to find ways to assist our students and the larger campus
community.¿

Pacleb hopes students will make a connection between the
concepts learned in class and the co-curricular activities and events.

Named after Hugh O. La Bounty, the university¿s third
president, the endowed chair brings distinguished visitors and organizers
events that expose students to a variety of experiences, views and opinions.

La Bounty core committee members include: Terri Gómez (ethnic
& women¿s studies); Sandy Kewanhaptewa-Dixon (ethnic & women¿s
studies); Anita Jain (ethnic & women¿s studies); Pacleb, Jami Grosser
(Pride Center); Lorena Marquez (Cesar E. Chávez Center for Higher Education);
Mayra Lewis (Violence & Prevention Women¿s Resource Center); Lucy Soriano,
a student assistant majoring in gender, ethnicity and multicultural studies;
and Martha Yanamura, (ethnic & women¿s studies).
