President Michael Ortiz recently shared the budget challenges facing higher education and Cal Poly Pomona on Charter Cable's "Local Edition."

Hosted by Tracy Young, the Local Edition news segment is aired in conjunction with the cable company's local broadcast of CNN Headline News.

Unprecedented budget cuts have made it difficult for the university to serve all eligible students. This year, Cal Poly Pomona received about 27,000 applications from qualified students and will accept just over 3,000 first-time freshmen and transfers students. Two years ago, the university admitted about 3,500 first-time freshmen alone.

Ortiz also discusses a proposal to work with other CSU campuses in the area, such as Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Fullerton, to share resources and technology and build stronger programs. The collaborations would also provide some cost benefits to the universities.
