In his video address on Feb. 8, President Ortiz talks about the decisions made and actions taken in the last two years, providing some background information on the budget situation. In 2008, Cal Poly Pomona forecasted darker budget days and began limiting hiring for faculty, management, staff and temporary positions. More than $6 million or 112 jobs have been lost in the last two years.
"You cannot take a 22 percent budget cut and not feel the pain," Ortiz says. The university is looking at an additional 10 percent cut for 2010-11. In the next week, the university will be sending information to the labor council representatives on a voluntary work reduction program.
The president's weekly message also includes som e good news - $1.2 million dollars in federal funding for aerospace engineering and Professor Renford Reese appearing on an ESPN promotional spot for Black History Month.
Ortiz also invites the campus community to attend the winter quarter Brown Bag with the Presidents on Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. in Ursa Major, Bronco Student Center.
