Our Mission

Male Success Initiatives (MSI) stands with men of color of all races, creeds, sexual orientations, abilities, and other intersectional identities at Cal Poly Pomona. Through holistic and culturally relevant programming, cross-campus and interdepartmental support networks, and innovative services, we strive to close the gaps of retention and graduation rates among men of color at CPP.

MSI warmly welcomes any person who uplifts our institutional values and principles of community, regardless of how they identify. It is also a space for people of all backgrounds to explore, learn, connect, and build coalition.

We celebrate diversity in all its forms and are committed to providing a respectful and inclusive environment for every individual.

Our Vision

MSI scholars will be prepared, connected, and empowered to pursue academic success, personal well-being and career readiness at Cal Poly Pomona.

  • Prepare: MSI prepares its scholars for the rigors of collegiate life. Through cohort programing, we prepare incoming students in persisting through their first year and beyond.
  • Connect: MSI’s collaborative ethos and interdepartmental relationships provide scholars with valuable campus resources and supportive faculty/staff networks.
  • Empower: By executing its mission and vision, MSI will develop scholars who are empowered in creating their own realities, fostering a sense of community, and achieving their academic goals.

Values and Standards

EXCELLENCE

  • Excellence is striving to do more and be great even if that means making errors along the way.
  • Standards of Excellence: We hold all staff, students, faculty, administrators and full- time, to a high standard. Professional staff will discuss an individual’s ability to achieve excellence on a regular basis (1:1s, in- service, staff meetings).

COMMITMENT

  • Commitment is a pledge to give your time and energy to something or someone you believe in.
  • Standards of Commitment: Being present, focused on departmental goals, and doing good work. All staff will put in maximum
  • effort to achieve the tasks at hand.

COLLABORATION

  • Collaboration helps employees work together to achieve a common goal in ways that benefit a company and its employees. Standards of Collaboration: Staff will work with all divisional and external partners to achieve teamwork orientated success. A common goal trumps individual desire

SERVICE

  • Service is the occupation or function of serving; contributing to the welfare of others; a helpful act. Simply stated, we put
  • others above ourselves. Standards of Service: At MSI, We>Me. We strive to provide support to our department, our colleagues, and the division in all aspects
  • of our shared goals.

GROWTH

  • Growth is having the drive to continuously improve both oneself and the department. There are no limitations to our success.
  • Standards of Growth: All staff will seek campus opportunities that will challenge and hone their professional skills. Student staff will engage in coaching and mentoring opportunities to discuss and strategize growth opportunities.
