Faculty Mentors

Dr. Mary Danico is a professor within Cal Poly Pomona’s Psychology & Sociology department. Her areas of expertise are in race relations and family, and her research interests include Asian American studies, Korean American family and community formation, ethnic identity, 1.5 and second generation issues, immigration, diaspora and reverse migration, and LGBT communities.

Dr. Danico mentored Cohort 16’s Dominic Lozano in conducting his own independent research project as part of the McNair Scholars Program.

Past Publications

Dr. Claudia Garcia-Des Lauriers is an assistant professor within Cal Poly Pomona’s Geography & Anthropology department. Her areas of study include Mesoamerica (esp. Central Mexico & Pacific Coast of Chiapas), art and archaeology, religion, trade and interaction, and identity and material culture. 

Dr. Garcia-Des Lauriers mentored Cohort 16’s Cheyennedra Bourne and Jessennya Hernandez in conducting their own independent research projects as part of the McNair Scholars Program.

Past Publications

Dr. Alejandro Morales is an assistant professor within Cal Poly Pomona’s Psychology & Sociology Department. He received his Ph. D. from University of Nebraska-Lincoln, with specialties in counseling psychology, Latina/o psychology, immigration, language brokering, sexual orientation and gender identity, diabetes prevention and intervention, and research methods. Past research that he has been involved with dealt with the importance of culturally targeted interventions for Latinos with diabetes (PDF).

Dr. Morales mentored Cohort 16’s Stephanie Bañuelos in conducting her own independent research project as part of the McNair Scholars Program.
