About

The Custodial & Recycling Services team is committed to providing a clean, safe, and healthy environment for the campus community. Custodial Services takes immense pride in the appearance and cleanliness of the campus and the impact the department has on the academic experience. Every student, faculty and staff member who enters a campus building has the right to a clean, safe and sanitary work and learning environment. Our goal is to continuously improve the level of cleanliness in order to set the highest standards throughout the CSU system. We do so by remaining current in the areas of environmentally sustainable products and industry best practices to achieve the highest levels of health, efficiency, and effectiveness. Custodial & Recycling Services has approximately 2.5 million square feet to maintain across 105 campus buildings. The cleanable square footage is approximately 1.6 million. The department is composed of one custodial manager, one assistant custodial manger, six leads, 51 custodians, four day porters and three floor crew members. Each custodian responsible for cleaning approximately 30,000 square feet.

Custodial Services is moving toward a zone management approach to maintain the cleanliness of campus building. This is being accomplished through the five levels of APPA 5 cleanliness. At Cal Poly Pomona, we strive to maintain Level 3

  • Level 1 – Orderly Spotlessness
  • Level 2 – Ordinary Tidiness
  • Level 3 – Casual Inattention
  • Level 4 – Moderate Dinginess
  • Level 5 – Unkempt Neglect

Recycling Services is tasked with developing and implementing a comprehensive waste and recycling program. Working collaboratively with the campus community, this unit oversees areas of waste prevention, recycling, composting, recycled product research, public education and campus recycling procedures. A plan has been developed to comply with all federal, state, and local statutes and regulations governing solid waste issues.

The CSU system is committed to designing a 50% waste reduction and recycling program.

Recycling Services recycles hundreds of tons of plastic, paper, cardboard and glass annually. While many stakeholders are aware of the large volume recycled, most stakeholders are unaware of the waste reduction practices that are in use:

  • Purchase recycled and unbleached paper towel rolls.
  • Purchase products that are durable, reusable, repairable, and recyclable.
  • Purchase cleaning supplies in bulk and concentrated form. This practice delivers more product for less packaging and is usually less expensive.
  • Use cleaners without toxic, corrosive, and flammable chemicals. Read labels. Look for products that do not require special handling and/or do not have warnings.
  • Dispense cleaning solutions in refillable containers such as pump spray bottles. Use products in non-aerosol containers when possible.
  • Use washable rags.
