Joyce Hesselgrave

Joyce is a landscape artist who has looked to the incredibly spatial, spiritual, and richly colorful vistas of California, Hawaii, and the Southwest of America for her inspirations. In her newer work, Joyce has explored interpreting the urban landscape of her native California neighborhoods in pastel and oil.

She holds a great passion for plein aire watercolor and pastel. Joyce has shown artwork at Los Angeles area galleries and museums. Her education includes a BA in Finer Art and MFA in painting and drawing from Claremont Graduate University. Teaching credentials in multiple subject, single subject art, and art specialist. California Mentor Art Teacher in 1992, 1994, and 1996.

In the late ‘80’s, Joyce worked with the Getty Museum to write curriculum for the newly established Discipline Based Art Education program developed for Los Angeles County schools. She piloted one of the LA areas’ first computer publishing programs for elementary school. In the 90’s, Joyce taught high school and presented painting, drawing, computer art, animation, and crafts classes, as well as International Baccalaureate art classes. She is currently employed by IB as a diploma examiner in Southern California.

Since the year 2000, she has enjoyed teaching at Cal Poly, and is energized by the positive changes throughout the college. She specializes in art education, drawing, and crafts. Joyce is currently the advisor for the Art Credential in the Education Department, and also teaches art classes for liberal studies. Joyce’s crafts classes created a large glass mosaic mural which stands in the Lyle Center amphitheater, and can be seen on her website.
