CSU Transfers

When transferring from one CSU campus to another, the handling of benefits and unused absence balances is within the CSU system. For exact details, especially regarding any campus-specific policies, please contact both the departing and receiving Benefits Departments for clarity on the transition.

  • Health and Other Benefits: Health, dental, and vision insurance, as well as retirement benefits, transfer seamlessly between CSU campuses. If there is no significant gap between appointments, your benefits enrollment will continue without interruption.
  • Retirement Contributions: If you participate in CalPERS, your retirement contributions and service credits continue to accumulate without a break. Similarly, other retirement plans (such as the 403(b), 401k or 457 plans) remain accessible, as they are CSU-wide programs.
  • Vacation and Sick Leave Balances: Accrued vacation and sick leave balances generally transfer directly when moving between CSU campuses, provided there is no break in service. This allows you to retain your accrued time without needing to cash it out or restart accruals at the new campus.
    • Only up to 80 hours of vacation can transfer to the other CSU, any remaining vacation balance will be paid out in one lump sum.
  • Compensatory Time Off (CTO): Usually paid out at the employee’s current hourly rate upon separation from the CSU. This ensures that employees receive compensation for any overtime hours they worked but did not take as time off.
  • Personal Holiday: If an employee did not use their personal holiday before separation, it will be paid out upon separation.
