The Lyle Center Presents:

Black Food Matters: Racial Justice in the Wake of Food Justice is a virtual public lecture inspired by the 2020 book of the same name by Hanna Garth and Ashante M. Reese analyzing Black food culture and the violence and threats it faces.  

Joining the discussion are the following educators, experts and activists: Professor Analena Hope Hassberg from Cal Poly Pomona's Department of Ethnic and Women's Studies, whose research investigates food insecurity, food sovereignty and the centrality of food in liberation movements; Gillian Richards-Greaves, Associate Professor of Anthropology at Coastal Carolina University, who studies the cultural expressions of the African Diaspora; anthropological archaeologist Kimberly Kasper, Associate Professor of Anthropology at Rhodes College, who researches and teaches on the ecological and cultural legacy of food and medicinal practices; and Florida International University Ph.D. candidate Judith Williams, a McKnight doctoral fellow and former chef whose dissertation explores anti-black discrimination within Miami’s restaurant industry.
