Located on 16 acres (6.5 ha) adjacent to the main Cal Poly Pomona University campus, the Center's academic and community initiatives are designed to bring together diverse groups of students, scholar-experts, policymakers and community members committed to a sustainable future . We believe this future is best achieved through the development of ecological, social and economic systems that regenerate, enabling communities to provide for the future as well as the present.

WHO WAS JOHN T. LYLE?

The University Special Collections and Archives opens its vaults to reveal rare and never-before-seen artifacts and materials related to the founding director of the Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies. The exhibition will be open to the public throughout the 2019-20 academic year.

Throughout October 2019, the Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies commemorated its 25th anniversary with a series of public programs:

- Ex perts Dialogue: The Future of Regenerative Design. A panel discussion featuring some of the nation's leading voices in sustainable design.
- Foraging Southern California. A lecture and book signing by lecturer and alumnus Douglas Kent.
- John T. Lyle and the Future of Regenerative Design. An exhibition of John T. Lyle's legacy as a pioneer in regenerative studies, curated by his daughter, artist Cybele Lyle at the Don B. Huntley Gallery.

Experts Dialogue: The Future of Regenerative Design

OCT. 11, 2019 —The opening event commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies, "The Future of Regenerative Design" featured some of today’s leading voices in design and sustainability:

Edward Mazria, FAIA, Hon. FRAIC, an internationally lauded architect and founder of Architecture 2030, a research organization dedicated to reducing energy consumption and greenhouse emissions;
David Hertz, FAIA, whose eponymous practice specializes in green architecture and design; and
Debra Guenther, FASLA, a landscape architect and partner at Mithun nationally recognized for her leadership on green infrastructure and ecosystem service issues.

The panel was moderated by Andrew Wilcox, professor and chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona, named among the “ Top 25 Most Admired Educators in Architecture, Interiors, and Landscape Architecture” by DesignIntelligence.

Lecture and Book Signing: Foraging Southern California

OCT. 15, 2019 — Sink your teeth into the latest book by Douglas Kent, landscape architecture alumnus and regenerative studies lecturer. “Foraging Southern California: 118 Nutritious, Tasty and Abundant Foods” (Adventure Publications, October 2019) is a field guide for beginner and intermediate-level foragers, introducing them to delicious options of wild edibles from berries and fruits, seeds and roots, to aquatic options like kelp and crayfish.

About the author: An activist and principal of Douglas Kent + Associates, Kent’s expertise is in ecological land management, firescaping and post-fire recovery. Read his Q&A about firescaping and sustainable land management.

Exhibition: John T. Lyle and the Future of Regenerative Design

OCT. 17-DEC. 8, 2019 — Curated by his daughter, artist Cybele Lyle, this exhibition focused on understanding the work of landscape architect John T. Lyle as a pioneer in the field of regenerative design.

Exhibited throughout Fall 2019 at the Don B. Huntley Gallery, the exhibition explored four major spheres of Lyle's work that each played a unique role in expanding his own vision and understanding of the role of landscape architecture as part of larger regenerative-based living.

I n conjunction with the 25th anniversary celebration of the Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies, John T. Lyle and the Future of Regenerative Design focused on understanding the work of landscape architect John T. Lyle as a pioneer in the field of regenerative design.

urated by his daughter, artist Cybele Lyle , the exhibition explores four major spheres of Lyle's work that each played a unique role in expanding his own vision and understanding of the role of landscape architecture as part of larger regenerative-based living.

The first focuses on his work in regenerative design within his own local community, which includes Lyle's role in the landscape architecture graduate department and the 606 studios, as well as his biggest project – the Center for Regenerative Studies. The second sphere is that of the private residence where Lyle explored regenerative systems on a smaller, more controlled scale using his own garden and studio, and other projects such as the Francis Dean and Ron Quinn residences. The third is concerned with the outside communities, in which he took the ideas of the Center out into other parts of the country, working with different climates, geographies and communities on projects such as Oberlin College, AMERC and Shalom Hill. The fourth sphere examines the span of his career is the realm of travel and discourse, addressing the role of exchange of ideas and influences all over the world through talks, lectures and teaching abroad. The exhibition concludes by looking towards the future by examining the relevance of Lyle's work in today's conversations and challenges around the state of the environment.
