Scholarships
The Department of Architecture has numerous scholarship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. Some provide financial support for tuition, while others fund travel and research.
The sections below outline the deadlines and requirements for each scholarship and, in the case of travel-research programs, the outcomes of recent recipients.

The L.T. Shanks Travel Scholarship is awarded to architecture students, supporting their research and travel based on an approved proposal. Recipients present their findings as part of the department's annual Bernard Zimmerman Lecture Series.

Open to: Third- and fourth-year undergraduate students and second-year graduate student
Scholarships available: 1-2 every year
Scholarship amount: Applicant must propose a budget between $2,500-$3,000

Additional Details: Student applicants must present a detailed proposal, budget, portfolio, and academic record. This is NOT to support travel in the International Year or Summer Abroad programs. The L.T. Shanks Scholarship is a form of independent program of travel, research and study.
2018-19 L.T. Shanks Scholar: Franco Mellone | Sustainability in Kenyan Architecture
The Pitassi Scholarship is for high-achieving students with interested in the role of housing in community development. The ideal candidate demonstrates academic achievement, exceptional community service and leadership qualities.
ELIGIBILITY & APPLICATION DETAILS
Open To: Architecture, landscape architecture, and urban and regional planning majors with a minimum 3.0 GPA for freshmen and sophomore applicants

Additional Details: Applicants must submit a one-page essay on the importance of housing in community development, and a sample of the design portfolio. Examples of appropriate items to include in your portfolio include: architectural design work (process drawings/conceptual work/sketching); computer modeling exercises and rendering; fine arts projects and free-hand drawings; photographs of physical models; and photography. Please do not send original artwork.
First- and second-year students are eligible to apply their first year + one additional year after acceptance to Cal Poly Pomona. Incoming transfer students are eligible to apply for one (1) year upon acceptance to the university. Awardees shall be eligible for consideration of a paid internship over the summer with a private development firm. Award recipient is required to send a thank-you letter to the donor.

Scholarships Available: 1 every year

Additional Details: Applicants will be judged on academic record (include unofficial transcript), portfolio with at least three projects, and a letter in which the applicant discusses goals in an anticipated career in the architectural profession. Include the names of two faculty member as references. Award recipient is required to write a thank-you letter to the donor.

Open To: Undergraduates with freshman, sophomore, junior and senior standings, a 3.5 GPA, and enrolled as a full-time architecture major with evidence of financial need

Additional Details: Applicant will be judged on academic record (unofficial transcript), portfolio with at least three projects, and one letter of recommendation. Applicants must be self-starters, leaders, team players and multi-disciplined. Minority and women candidates are particularly encourafed to apply. Students may reapply for the scholarship annually; however, students must demonstrate successful completion of coursework in the previous academic year. Priority will be given to renewable scholarship recipients. Award recipient is required to write a thank-you letter to the donor.

This annual scholarship will be awarded to individuals who are self-starters, leaders, team players and multi-disciplined. Minority and women candidates are particularly encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to renewable scholarship recipients.
Established in honor of the late Professor Emeritus Paul Helmle, this eponymous program honors his commitment to quality design and its importance to architectural education. This scholarship is open to students at the end of their second year. Finalists are chosen by second-year faculty who will jointly evaluate the work of applicants by means of portfolios, and determine the recipient(s) based on the clarity of their projects, drawing ability, formal and spatial quality, and conceptual strength.
