Axel Schmitzberger is a licensed architect and Professor at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and has taught at various academic institutions both in Los Angeles and Austria in the areas of Architecture, Multimedia and Graphic Design. He practiced in various architectural design and multimedia offices on internationally recognized projects prior to establishing the multidisciplinary design firm hostcell. In 2001 he relocated to Los Angeles and after working for Morphosis Architects on several international projects, he pursued a teaching career with emphasis on digital fabrication and construction, while maintaining a small architecture and graphic design practice. After several joint ventures and partnership in the award-winning Design/Build practice Domaen, Inc. he recently founded A PLATFORM, merging his various interests. Between 2019-2021 he co-authored the research and subsequent curation and design of an exhibition on Austrian American Architects, titled RESIDENT ALIEN, and of the work and life of Austrian-Hawaiian architect Alfred Preis. He is the author of "Alfred Preis Displaced, the Tropical modernism of the Austrian emigre and Architect of the USS Arizona Memorial" (Doppelhouse Press 2022). He currently divides his time between working in his practice APLATFORM and teaching. He resides in Austria, Los Angeles and Hawai‘i.
