Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
Mission Statement of Mechanical Engineering Department
Our mission is to provide a well-rounded, quality education based on fundamental and applied knowledge in mathematics, basic sciences, and mechanical engineering. Graduates of the program will be effective contributors to the mechanical engineering profession within a few years after graduation.
ABET Accreditation Assessments and Outcomes
Cal Poly Pomona Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering program is accredited by ABET.
Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) of Mechanical Engineering Department
ABET’s definition of Program Educational Objectives: “Program educational objectives are broad statements that describe what graduates are expected to attain within a few years after graduation. Program educational objectives are based on the needs of the program’s constituencies.”
PEO 1: Provide a solid background in mathematics and science coupled with an applications-oriented polytechnic approach in the presentation of engineering course material which may be synthesized over the first few years of one's engineering career.
PEO 2: Provide a broad set of general education courses that will provide students with the necessary background to understand the economic, environmental, ethical, political, societal and cultural impact of their engineering solutions and decisions which may be implemented in ethical and professional situations soon after graduation.
PEO 3: Develop good written and verbal communication skills which will be used as a cornerstone throughout an engineer's career.
PEO 4: Encourage lifelong learning in their chosen field underscoring the importance to continue to obtain professional development and training on the job as needed during one's entire career.
PEO 5: Provide the necessary tools and background to become an engineering professional who will continue to be effective in the first few years of his/her professional assignment.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) of Mechanical Engineering Department
ABET’s definition of Student Learning Outcomes: “Student outcomes describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation. These relate to the knowledge, skills, and behaviors that students acquire as they progress through the program.”
Students completing BSME will attain:
SLO 1: an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
SLO 2: an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
SLO 3: an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
SLO 4: an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
SLO 5: an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
SLO 6: an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
SLO 7: an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
