Earthquake Preparedness

Get Ready To Shakeout!

CPP's Annual Great California ShakeOut is Back

The Great California ShakeOut is intended to educate and prepare the campus community to be able to react quickly and practice safe emergency procedures when a real earthquake occurs.

Date: Thursday, October 16th, 2025

Time: 10:16 A.M.

What Will Happen During Great ShakeOut?

Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to participate in the state-wide earthquake drill whether you are on campus or at home.

The campus community will receive a safety alert message on their cell phones, network phones, and email. This alert message will prompt everyone to “DROP, LOCK, COVER, and HOLD ON”. Hold in place for a minute from when you received the message. This will conclude the drill.  (Message delivery time may vary depending on location, WiFi connection, and cell phone service provider.)

What Will Happen During Evacuation Drill?

At 11:45 a.m., Cal Poly Pomona’s Safety Alert System will send out mass messaging prompting the start of the drill. Messages will be sent via CPP email, phone and text message to all students, faculty and staff. In addition, a pop-up message will appear on CPP-owned computers.

Evacuation coordinators will assist students, faculty, staff and visitors in evacuating the buildings as they make their way to the exit. After safely evacuating the building, all individuals should go to the evacuation site, as directed by the evacuation coordinators. The drill is scheduled immediately before U-Hour so that most students may not need to return to the classroom, unless directed by their instructor.

At approximately 12:00 p.m., a second mass message will be sent out indicating an “all-clear” to conclude the evacuation drill, and normal activities can resume.

The evacuation drill will include a test of the university’s Safety Alert System and engaging fire alarms in instructional and select administrative buildings across campus. The drill will help students, faculty and staff become more familiar with CPP’s emergency preparedness and emergency procedures.
