Master’s Program in Psychology

Welcome!

Thank you for your interest in our Master of Science (M.S.) in Psychology program. This program is designed to prepare you for the Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) license in the State of California. MFT licensure is administered by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS). Our program meets all the requirements set forth by the BBS and is approved by the Western Accreditation of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) is a form of psychotherapy or counseling that addresses the behaviors of all family members and how these behaviors affect individual family members, the relationships between family members, and the family unit as a whole. Students in our MFT program will learn the basics for how to conduct individual therapy, couple therapy, family therapy, and child/adolescent therapy.

More specifically, we hope that students in our program will learn:

  • How to develop a therapeutic alliance with clients
  • Theories and techniques for working with children and adolescents
  • How to identify and report child abuse
  • Theories and techniques for working with couples
  • Knowledge about sexual disorders and dysfunctions and techniques for how to intervene
  • Theories and techniques for working with families
  • How to identify and report elder and dependent adult abuse
  • How to identify and intervene with intimate partner violence
  • Theories and techniques for working with groups
  • Knowledge about the biological and neurological bases of behavior
  • Knowledge about how drugs, alcohol, and psychotropic medications affect behaviors
  • How to formulate diagnostic impressions regarding mental disorders using the edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) 
  • How to understand major psychological tests that measure intelligence, personality traits, psychological symptoms, and other matters relevant to psychological assessment
  • How multicultural and gender issues relate to theories and intervention strategies of psychotherapy
  • Professional ethics and laws that relate to the practice of psychotherapy
  • How to maintain professional boundaries and separate out one's own issues from those of one's clients
  • An openness and responsiveness to supervision and other forms of feedback
  • Other issues relevant to being a mental health professional

Multicultural issues are infused into every course, with one entire class dedicated to the topic (PSY 5575, Cross-Cultural & Gender Issues in Therapy  & Recovery Model). Most practicum sites on our approved list afford students the opportunity to gain clinical experience working with diverse and underserved communities. Multicultural competence is an ethical imperative for mental health professionals, and we do our best to help students build multicultural knowledge, awareness, and skills.

No. We only admit students once a year for admission in the Fall Semester.

Our program is full-time for two years.

Our program is designed to be full-time for 2 years and classes are only offered once a year. If you attend part-time, it will take at least 3 years to complete the program.

This is a full-time program and most classes are offered during the day. It may be possible to work part-time and attend our program, but not full-time. Many of our students work part-time during the first year, but this becomes more difficult during the second year when students are required to do a 20-hour/week practicum placement (traineeship/internship).

We admit a maximum of 16 students each year, out of approximately 200 applicants, so this is a competitive program. Our program also operates on the “cohort model” meaning those 16 students come into the program together, take all their classes together, and hopefully stay together through graduation. We find students appreciate the small cohort size and the camaraderie and collegiality they build with both their classmates and our faculty.

You must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Students with a GPA below 3.0 should not apply.

This is a full-time program for two years and most classes are offered during the day. First-year students attend classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays and second-year students on Mondays and Wednesdays. During the second year, students are at their half-time clinical placements (also known as practicum, traineeship, or internship) on Mondays, Wednesdays, and/or Fridays.

Yes. For MFT students, this is referred to as your “practicum” or “traineeship.” This is a BBS requirement for licensure as an MFT. In our program, students begin with an introductory practicum during the Spring semester of the first year. In this first practicum our MFT students serve as “mentees” to students in the Pomona Unified School District. Also during the Spring semester of the first year, students must apply for their formal practicum placement or “traineeship.” This is when students officially begin accruing hours toward licensure. Our program provides a list of approved practicum sites. Students are then responsible for contacting these sites and going through their application process. During the second year, students are at their practicum sites half-time (or 20 hours per week). Students attend practicum on Mondays, Wednesdays, and/or Fridays, and class on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

We will consider applicants from related majors (e.g., sociology, social work, education) if they have had at least 24 semester or 36 quarter units of psychology courses. Students from completely unrelated majors (e.g., English, Engineering) are not qualified for our program and should not apply.
