Adding Additional Credentials and Authorizations

Once you hold a preliminary credential you can add additional teaching or subject areas onto the existing credential. Prior to taking courses, please consult with the Credential Office to ensure you take the correct courses and have the appropriate requirements relevant to your existing teaching credential.

Adding the Single Subject Credential onto a Multiple Subject Credential:

  • EDU 5205 (sign up for the subject specific section of this course)
  • Subject Matter Competence in the new subject area
  • Valid MS Credential with English Learner Authorization must be held
  • Application and processing fee submitted directly to CTC

Adding the Multiple Subject Credential onto a Single Subject Credential:

  • EDU 5105, 5110, 5115, OR 5120 (Multiple Subject methods courses) 
  • EDU 5100 (Reading)
  • Subject Matter Competence in elementary education
  • RICA
  • Valid SS Credential with English Learner Authorization must be held
  • Application and processing fee submitted directly to CTC

Adding another Single Subject Area onto a Single Subject Credential:

  • Subject Matter Competence in the new subject area
  • EDU 5205 (sign up for the subject specific section of this course)
  • Valid SS Credential with English Learner Authorization must be held
  • Application and processing fee submitted directly to CTC

Adding the Education Specialist Credential onto an Existing Multiple or Single Subject Credential: 
A variety of options exist and clinical practice is required. Please consult with the Credential Analyst.

You must apply directly to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) via a paper application for the credential once the above requirements have been met. The Credential Analyst will be able to offer guidance on this process but cannot make the credential recommendation on your behalf unless you are adding the Education Specialist credential.
