Nonviolent Conflict Transformation: The TRANSCEND Approach

Workshop Description:
Conflicts are rarely “resolved” completely in a sense that they disappear. However, they can be transformed through nonviolent means leading to desirable change. The focus of this workshop is on such nonviolent resolution and transformation of conflicts at personal, inter-personal, group and international levels. Workshop format will be highly interactive and include short lectures, facilitated discussions, and small group exercises.
Participants will:
• Learn the methods and applications of conflict analysis.
• Acquire skills to discriminate between individual, cultural & structural types of violence & their roots.
• Explore the use of dialog and negotiation process for conflict resolution.
• Understand the creative power of compassion and nonviolence in transforming conflicts.
• Gain insights about the role of healing and reconciliation for transcending conflicts.
This workshop will be valuable for college faculty and students, school teachers, business and community leaders, peace workers, mediators and other professionals who are interested in the nonviolent transformation of conflicts.

Johan Galtung
Johan Galtung is internationally regarded as the founder of the academic discipline of Peace Studies. He established the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo in 1959, and launched the Journal of Peace Research in 1964. In 1993 he founded TRANSCEND, a peace and development network.
His major publications include Gandhi's Political Ethics (1955), Essays in Peace Research and Methodology (1974-88), The True Worlds (1980), There Are Alternatives (1984), The Way is the Goal: Gandhi Today (1992/1998), Human Rights in Another Key (1994), Peace by Peaceful Means (1996), Conflict Transformation by Peaceful Means (2000), Searching for Peace: the Road to TRANSCEND (2002), and Transcend and Transform (2004).
Professor Galtung is recipient of numerous honors and awards including the Right Livelihood Award (the "Alternative Nobel Prize"), and the Jamnalal Bajaj International Award for Promoting Gandhian values outside India. He has served as a consultant to several UN agencies and has played an active role in helping mediate in over 50 major conflicts around the world over the past four decades.
