Rediscovering Gandhian Wisdom: Building a Peaceful Future

The Ahimsa Center at Cal Poly Pomona is offering to elementary, middle and highschool teachers a rare opportunity for professional development and educational advancement through participation in a conference on Gandhi, nonviolence and peace, featuring internationally acclaimed experts and panels of engaged educators. The participating K-12 educators will learn about:
● Gandhi’s life, thought and actions● Gandhi and the wisdom of learning and leading
● Gandhi and the wisdom of Ahimsa (nonviolence), peace and sustainability
● Integrating Gandhi and King in K-12 curricula
● Ahimsa as a guiding principle for schools
● Ways to integrate conference experiences in classroom teaching
Subsidized Cost of Course Credit
The Center is also providing K-12 teachers at a significantly subsidized cost two units of course credit for a fee of only $250.
The fee of $250 also covers participation in full conference, October 17-19, 2008, including three lunches, two dinners, six refreshment breaks, a concert on Saturday evening and a workshop on Sunday afternoon.
Course Credit Requirements
Extended University Credit with a letter grade may be earned for and upper division course, HST 499: Gandhi, Nonviolence and Peace (2 units) by completing the following steps/requirements:
1. Pre-register for the course by the deadline of October 10, 2008.
2. Participate in the conference, Rediscovering Gandhian Wisdom, October 17-19, 2008.
3. Submit five page written report (typewritten, double-spaced) by October 27, 2008.
4. Follow guidelines for report requirement (see below).
Guidelines for Report: Report should be a reflective summary of the conference. Participants are especially encouraged to explore in their reports the curricular implications of the conference learning experience by identifying specific insights and ideas from the conference sessions which may be integrated in their classroom teaching. Report Due on or before Monday, November 3, 2008.
