Competencies Matched to Learning Outcomes
Through participating in curricular and co-curricular learning opportunities, the graduates of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, will develop competencies to become engaged citizens and productive members of society.
The image describes the circle of competencies. These 5 core competencies are Written Communication, Critical Thinking, Information Literacy, Quantitative Reasoning, and Oral Communication. Written communication is using writing skills to communicate persuasively and coherently to various audiences (ILO: Practioners and GE SLO 1a). Critical Thinking is the ability to think in a way that is clear, reasoned, reflective, informed by evidence and aimed at deciding what to believe or do(ILO: Intergrative thinkers+ GE SLO 1d). Information Literacy is the ability to "recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use the needed information" for a wide range of purposes.(ILO: Intergrative Thinkers + GE SLO 1c). Quantitative Reasoning is the ability to apply mathematical concepts to the interpretation and analysis of quantitative information in order to solve a wide range of problems(ILO: Intergrative Thinkers + GE SLO 1e). Oral communication is communication is communication by means of spoken language for informational, persuasive and expressive purposes(ILO: Practioners & GE SLO 1b).
