The California State University (CSU) defines being in foster care as being a dependent or ward of the court at any time since birth.
To qualify for the Renaissance Scholars program, you must:
- Be a current or former foster youth (verification required)
- Be a California resident or an AB 540/2000 nonresident tuition exemption student.
Yes, you do not need to be a part of EOP to apply for the Renaissance Scholars program.
We offer two ways to access services through our program. The Full Pledge program requires students to attend a certain number of events and activities throughout the year. However, if you're unable to commit to the full program, our drop-in services allow you to access support as needed without full commitment.
We accept the following types of court documentation that show a student was in foster care:
- Court Order
- Juvenile Court Dependency Letter
- Foster Care Placement Record
If you need help getting your Ward of Court document, contact the California Foster Care Ombudsperson’s Office at 1-877-846-1602 or complete the online verification request form.
No, the program partners with university housing services to ensure students have a place to live year-round, but the housing costs are the responsibility of the student. You may be eligible for funding through Renaissance Scholars that can help with educational expenses like housing.
After you apply, our staff will review your application and court documents. You will then receive information about the next steps, which includes a required RS Welcome Interview.
The interview process helps us learn more about you and your needs, so we can provide the best support for your success at Cal Poly Pomona.
Priority registration allows students to register for classes before the general population, giving them the first choice of courses and schedules.
The Care Center has been able to assist students facing unforeseen emergencies or crises that impact their success, such as homelessness (living in a car, motel, shelter, or temporarily staying with friends or family), uninsured medical or dental emergencies, or being a victim of a crime or accident. If you chose to share that you are part of RS, we may be able to work with the Care Center to coordinate funding to support your emergency need.
