Admission Requirements for International Transfers

As a transfer applicant, you must meet the minimum California State University (CSU) eligibility requirements listed below as the first step in being considered for admission.  If you meet the CSU requirements, Cal Poly Pomona will consider your application using supplemental criteria which are dependent upon the academic major you have chosen.

NOTE: We are currently not accepting applications from Lower-Division Transfers (applicants who have completed less than 60 semester transferable college units (90 quarter units).

As an international applicant, you must:

  1. Meet all CSU Eligibility Requirements (listed below)
  2. Meet all testing requirements
  3. Obtain an F-1 visa
  4. Agree to purchase University Health Insurance for each year at Cal Poly Poona
  5. Submit proof of measles and rubella immunization
  6. Provide certification of financial eligibility or complete the affidavit of financial support

Minimum CSU Eligibility Requirements

If you have completed 60 or more transferable semester college units (90 quarter units) prior to transfer, you are considered an upper-division transfer student, and the following requirements must be satisfied:

  1. Have a cumulative GPA of 2.0;
  2. Be in good standing at the last college or university you attended;
  3. Have completed or will complete prior to transfer at least 30 semester units (45 quarter units) of general education (GE) requirements with a grade of "C" or better. The 30 semester units must include:
    • English Composition
    • Oral Communication
    • Critical Thinking
    • College-level Mathematics
  4. Complete all 60 transferable semester college units by end of the previous spring for Fall Quarter, end of the previous summer for Winter Quarter, end of the previous fall for Spring Quarter, and end of the previous fall for Summer Quarter.
  5. Demonstrate appropriate proficiency in English.  If you have not completed at least 3 years of full-time enrollment at a secondary school where the principle language of instruction is English, you must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS).  Required scores are as follows:

Please note that admission will be rescinded for all applicants who are found not to be eligible after the final transcript has been evaluated.

Supplemental Eligibility Requirements

Program Impaction

The California State University (CSU) designates major programs as impacted when more applications are received in the initial filing period from CSU eligible applicants than can be accommodated by the campus.

Cal Poly Pomona's impacted majors are Aerospace Engineering , Animal Health Science , Animal Science , Architecture , Biology , Biotechnology , Chemical Engineering , Civil Engineering , Computer Engineering , Electrical Engineering , Mechanical Engineering , Psychology , Sociology and Undeclared .

The supplemental admission criteria usually include a rank ordering by Grade Point Average and other criteria designated by each academic program. For more information on major impaction, go to Transfer Impaction

All applicants who apply to an impacted program at Cal Poly Pomona are encouraged to identify a second choice major on their admission application.

Local and Non-Local Transfer Admissions

The supplemental admission criteria usually include a rank ordering by Grade Point Average and other criteria designated by each academic program. For more information on major impaction, go to Transfer Impaction

All applicants who apply to an impacted program at Cal Poly Pomona are encouraged to identify a second choice major on their admission application.

For all academic programs that are not listed above as impacted at the program level, supplemental criteria utilizing a grade point average will be applied to transfer applicants from another state or country or who graduate from a non-local high school.  For more information go to to Transfer Impaction.

College Board Advance Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Examination Credit

Cal Poly Pomona grants credit toward its undergraduate degrees for successful completion of specific AP, IB and CLEP exams.  Students who present scores of three or better will be granted up to six semester units (nine quarter units) of college credit*. Students must present official test score documentation to the Registrar's Office to receive credit.

2Scores must be four or better for Biology, Computer Science, Economics and Physics.

Admission Deadlines for Transfer Applicants

Please plan in advance so that you can meet all admission requirements and deadlines.

  1. Complete the admission application during the initial filing period as follows:
Quarter  Application Filing Period
Fall October 1 through November 30 of the prior year
Winter (when open for admission)   June 1 through June 30 of the prior year
Spring (when open for admission) August 1 through August 30

2. Submit official transcript(s) of all college coursework completed to date only if requested by the Office of Admissions and Outreach.  Look for the deadline on your BroncoDirect To Do List.

3. Submit an official final transcript(s)t of all college coursework completed and all other requested documents by the document deadline 

(July 15 for fall; October 1 for winter; February 1 for spring)

4. Submit your Enrollment Confirmation Deposit (ECD) by May 1 deadline.  Those who respond past the ECD deadline may be placed on an enrollment waiting list, deferred to a subsequent term or not permitted to register.
