Liberal Studies

The Polytechnic Approach

Regardless of emphasis, you will take ten core courses that introduce you to the fundamentals of knowledge and learning and develop you into an equity-minded leader. Here, you become a well-rounded, analytical thinker and dynamic problem solver who can connect ideas across disciplines, communicate effectively and make meaningful contributions across numerous professional fields. With the Liberal Studies program, create your own degree to reach your dreams, whether graduate school or a professional career in the nonprofit, corporate, public health or education sectors.

Courses

The Liberal Studies program serves two types of students: (1) undergraduate students preparing to teach in California public elementary schools, and (2) students with multiple disciplinary interests who seek to enter careers in law enforcement, human services, health professions, and graduate school among others. The program’s core curriculum focuses on gaining understanding of the human condition in relation to contemporary and emerging issues from different human and disciplinary perspectives. You will develop strong critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills that support the “soft skills” employers expect from employees. Liberal Studies courses are organized around four program themes (social responsibility/social justice, sustainability, creativity, and wellness) that are explored in courses and co-curriculum events.
