Major: Biology

University Program: Biology Graduate Student Association
Jennifer Flores Moreno sees biology as a field that creates a “sense of community that makes us mindful of the fact that we are just one part of an intricate ecosystem.” As a Cal Poly Pomona undergraduate, participating in the Early Career Research Apprenticeship, serving as a peer mentor in the Achieve Scholars Program and teaching bilingual 3rd grade science lessons as a Prete Fellow helped Jennifer realize that her passion for biology is equaled by her capacity to provide educational support. Jennifer’s master’s thesis centers around biology pedagogy, in which she employs active learning concepts to increase engagement and retention in mentoring four undergraduates from underserved groups. Jennifer is thrilled to collaborate on a university podcast featuring an array of educators to help a broad audience of students envision careers in science for themselves. She says, “science and education have been so important to improving my own life, I would be remiss to pass on the opportunity to share it with those in similar situations.” Jennifer plans to teach at the community college level.
