Supportive mentors and faculty have helped transform Maggie’s love of the outdoors into a desire to earn a Ph.D. in marine sciences. In summer 2023, as a National Science Foundation Sustainable Scholar, Maggie
participated in a week-long field trip on the northern coast of California, where she and other scholars met
fishermen, Indigenous people and other stakeholders to discuss marine challenges in the area. Her graduate thesis is focused on the effects of construction material and habitat metrics at the Bolsa Chica artificial reef. The research will help “support management efforts in offshore federal waters off California, and improve decision making related to marine infrastructure projects such as offshore energy development, harbor breakwaters, and compensatory mitigation projects involving artificial reefs.” Maggie especially enjoys sharing her passion for the ocean through scuba diving, working with students from a variety of CPP clubs to experience its thrills. She hopes to conduct research that will inform policy and protect communities as well as pay forward the kindness and enthusiasm that has shaped her own journey.
