College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences

From a young age, Fionn has been fascinated with language, especially for constructed ones found in stories such as Star Trek and The Lord of the Rings. This interest led to an opportunity in high school to take
an introductory linguistics class at Cal Poly Pomona, where Fionn discovered a passion for the impact of
communication. “I love the connection I find to other people through my study of language and recently
culture: My double major came after I became interested in sociolinguistics and the study of language’s
connection to and influence on factors like gender and socioeconomic class.” Cal Poly Pomona has motivated Fionn to develop community interests as well, including work through Kellogg Honors College with INSAN, a Pomona nonprofit that focuses on feeding the people experiencing homelessness, and GoSGV, a San Gabriel-based nonprofit promoting environmental activism through green transportation and personal health. Fionn hopes to become a researcher and engage in activism that supports gender diversity for those in academia and for research study subjects.
