Alex Armendariz chose regenerative studies because of the interconnectedness of food and tribal sovereignty for Native American populations. His research is focused on the Cahuilla tribal community in Southern California, exploring impacts of practices on traditional territories. As an undergraduate, he became involved with basic needs efforts at UC Riverside, including working with the university’s community garden and the Native American Student programs, which guided his interests in regeneration. As a residence life Intern for the events team at Cal Poly Pomona, he values the Native American Student Center as a cornerstone of his education. He thanks his mom for being his greatest inspiration “who gave me everything she had to ensure that I was able to pursue my education and whatever else I set my sights on.” He plans to apply research to advocate for the restoration of tribal cultural practices.
