2024-25 President's Scholars
Andres C. Torres
Chang Family President’s Scholar
Major: Mechanical Engineering
College of Engineering
Activities: CPP Liquid Rocket Lab: Mechanism and Controls Engineer; Treasurer of CPP Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics; WAVE Fellow, Caltech Autonomous Robotics and Controls Lab
“It’s like a superpower to will into existence any type of mechanism that of course doesn’t violate the laws
of physics,” Andres says of his love of engineering and its ability to provide knowledge and tools to create
machines for nearly any type of purpose. His interests in mechanical engineering and mathematics led to his current involvements with robotics, in large measure due to opportunities made available to him through Cal Poly Pomona faculty, Professor Alan Krinik and Professor Hubertus von Bremen. Through encouraging his math interests, Andres became an undergraduate researcher and applied for summer research, which recently culminated in the Caltech WAVE summer research program where he worked with Dr. Soon-Jo Chung, one of the nation's leading robotics researchers. Andres desires to pursue a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering studying robotics to advance cutting-edge robotics research and “to inspire the next generation of engineers to the possibilities engineering unlocks.”
