Updates on COVID-19
10/29/2020
From the Desk of the Executive Director:
Dear Students, Families, Colleagues and Program Partners:
Cal Poly Pomona has been closely monitoring the spread and impact on operations the COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) has had in the surrounding area. On March 11, 2020, University President, Soraya Coley, of Cal Poly Pomona announced that the campus would go to an instructional format promoting “social distancing” in an effort to minimize the risk of the Coronavirus appearance to our institution.
As a form of update to our campus partners and participants, we wanted to share that our campus community has recently been instructed that we will not be returning to campus no earlier than June of 2021.
In an effort to further minimize risk or spread of illness, the TRIO Pre-College Programs, which includes Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math Science and Educational Talent Search, developed and have been implementing our “Interrupted Services Plan”. This plan includes key student services to continue to be done virtually, online, or in a telecommunicated format. All tutoring services and academic advising will continue to be conducted virtually or via an online format. This system has been utilized all of last semester and is continuing this current semester (fall 2021). This has allowed for a seamless form of support for our student participants.
Program coordinators and academic advisors will continue to conduct their counseling sessions with participants via online service (email, social media, or direct messaging), virtual meeting Zoom, or by telephone (text messages or phone call) to ensure continuation of services. Our Educational Talent Search Program will likewise continue to suspend in-school office hours at their respective partner school sites. However, ETS staff will be available to its participants remotely, similar to the online methods used by the Upward Bound Programs.
The program staff and I understand that the interruption to in-person services presents new challenges for our student participants and our community partners. However, it is our priority to ensure the safety, health, and well-being of our student participants, their families, our community partners, and our program staff as a whole. We hope that these precautions will prove effective in preventing illnesses from spreading, while at the same time offering alternatives to services that must continue as part of our commitment to our participants and the institution. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at (909) 869-3439 or via email at rdquintero@cpp.edu. A Message from the Executive Director:
Dear Students, Families, Colleagues and Program Partners:
Cal Poly Pomona has been closely monitoring the spread and impact on operations the COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) has had in the surrounding area. On March 11, 2020, University President, Soraya Coley, of Cal Poly Pomona announced that the campus would go to an instructional format promoting “social distancing” in an effort to minimize the risk of the Coronavirus appearance to our institution. All courses are being moved to online formats beginning Wednesday, March 18th and through April 3rd (after the CPP campus spring break). Although campus operations and offices will remain open for business until this initial “social distancing” period, all international and non-essential travel, and CPP sponsored large events of over 100 attendees have been suspended until May 31, 2020. At that time the University administration will re-assess and re-evaluate next steps.
In an effort to further minimize risk or spread of illness, the TRIO Pre-College Programs, which includes Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math Science and Educational Talent Search, developed an “Interrupted Services Plan” in early March 2020. This plan includes key student services to move to a virtual, online, or telecommunicated format. Effective immediately, all tutoring services and academic advising will be moved to a virtual or online format.
The programs are currently working to implement virtual and/or online tutoring for program participants to access and work with program tutors. Tutoring has been suspended for a minimum of two weeks to prepare the necessary infrastructure and transition to fully online tutoring services. More information will be forthcoming on or before April 2nd. Tutoring services will be contingent upon the operation of the school districts we serve.
Program coordinators and academic advisors will conduct their counseling sessions with participants via online service (email, social media, or direct messaging), virtual meeting (Skype, Zoom, or GoTo Meeting), or by telephone (text messages or phone call) to ensure continuation of services. Our Cal Poly Pomona offices will remain open for business unless otherwise directed by the University administration. Our Educational Talent Search Program will likewise suspend in-school office hours at their respective partner school sites. However, ETS staff will be available to its participants remotely.
Lastly, all Saturday Academy workshop sessions planned for the months of March through May 2020 have been postponed. We will provide further information about rescheduled workshops at a later time upon the University’s re-evaluation of service interruption. This new plan for services for our TRIO Pre-College Programs will remain in effect until May 31, 2020.
