Smartphone Security Education

About

The smartphone market has grown rapidly in recent years while the traditional desktop PC market has remained relatively stagnant. Ubiquitous network connectivity and the ever growing number of apps available facilitates the adoption of this new technology. However, as the popularity grows, so does the security risk. Although this market is growing rapidly, education remains mostly in the realm of traditional computer designs, even when it comes to security.

Many students graduate with Computer Science (CS) or related degrees without any experience in smartphone security at the operating system or application level. This is greatly due to the difficulty in finding platform and resources for smartphone security education.

We discuss the development of a smartphone security education platform, sample educational resources (labs) that can be supported by the platform, and evaluate the efficacy of the developed platform and resources in promoting experiential learning in the domain of smartphone security education. The proposed platform is a hardware-software integrated system that will enable students to remotely connect to the platform, choose a smartphone security lab exercise supported by the platform and learn by performing the lab activities on real smartphone devices. The platform and resources will provide the students with the experiential learning opportunity through a hands-on experience that can inspire creative thinking and the motivation for future research.

Overview

Android

Users can connect to Android devices via an Internet dashboard/webpage toperform labs and instrumentation in real-time. Devices have vanilla builds of AOSP that has an embedded custom monitoring application used to facilitate interactions with the controller. Device operations can be monitored and controlled by a user via websockes connection.
