Office of Interdisciplinary Ethnic Studies
TEACHING & SCHOLARSHIP
The mission of the office is to support university initiatives related to AB 1460, which requires all California State University undergraduates to complete a 3-unit course in ethnic studies.
The Office of Interdisciplinary Ethnic Studies (OIES) will be supported by permanent funds appropriated by the state to implement California Assembly Bill (AB) 1460, the Ethnic Studies education requirement bill signed into law in 2020.
Specifically, The Office of Interdisciplinary Ethnic Studies will:
- Provide professional development for new tenure-line faculty hired as part of the ethnic studies cluster. This will include a faculty success affinity group comprising ethnic studies faculty, a public writing fellows program, and multi-week courses and workshops to support academic and public-facing scholarship.
- Facilitate community through events and management of the Office space for collaboration and mentorship.
- Increase the awareness and understanding of ethnic studies across the university, especially as it informs and furthers the work of other disciplines and develops a culture of critical awareness.
- Support the efforts of departments across campus to apply for and support faculty lines in ethnic studies.
- Facilitate learning communities through programming, including academic colloquiums, workshops, and a spring ethnic studies conference.
- Provide financial support in the form of research grants, developmental editors, book manuscript workshops, conference attendance, and more.
